DVD Movie review: Pan's Labyrinth

Pan's Labyrinth, this movie is a fantasy genre that is set in the 1940s right after the World War 2 period. The story focuses on this girl, Ofelia, whose life revolves around fantasy story books and was forced to live with her step dad and mum after her biological dad was killed in the world war. As you already notice, the girl has a spanish name, hence, the setting was in spain and took place post Spanish civil war in the 1944.

During her journey with her mum, pregnant with her brother, to the camp where her step dad resides, she stopped halfway through the journey and happen to place 1 piece of stone back on a totem that was erected out of nowhere. little did she know that she has awaken a mystical faery that will bring her back to her origins.

Ofelia's step dad was a highly domineering, merciless and cruel captain of the Pro-Franco army. It was where near the camp that she discovers Pan, a faithful guardian, a strange magical and demonic creature who has been guarding the mysterious labyrinth and who, when time comes, will reveal to her that she is the princess who long ago disappeared from enchanted realm. To discover the truth, Ofelia will have to face 3 dangerous trails that nothing on earth has prepared her for.

This story has a very sad and happy ending, its marvelously scripted and directed and being recorded only in spanish is its only flawed. But the subtitles more than made up for it.

This movie received 3 Academy Awards for Cinematography, Art Direction and Make up as well as another 3 BFTA Awards. Its a must watch and i would give 4.5/5 stars for it. After watching this movie, i felt very ashamed of myself, because there are things that the young Ofelia did which i think i would find it very difficult decision to make.

Well, for those who want a good DVD movie to watch, i would recommend this very highly, i hope this review will not be a spoiler as its less than 5% of the movie though... Till Then.....
